If all you do is peak into Burroughs Park as you're driving by on Hufsmith, you may be inclined to think it doesn't have anything to offer besides softball and soccer fields. I drove by numerous times before finally checking it out thoroughly and discovered an entirely different world past the sports fields. Tucked away is a pretty awesome playground which over looks a nice little fishing lake as well as a BBQ pavilion, numerous picnic tables, two sand volleyball courts, boardwalk, observation deck and fishing pier. There is even a dog park!
What We Loved
Burroughs Park was a pleasant surprise. The Harris County website doesn't do it justice. Even though we were right off a busy road, the park felt open (320 acres!) and peaceful. Park planners did a great job of maintaining the vegetation within the park which provided plenty of shade and refuge for wildlife like the little guy above! The dog park is the largest I have ever seen and I liked how it was set away from the rest of the park's amenities. I love my dogs but let's be honest, dog parks can be loud and a little less than calming.
What We'd Like To See Instead
Good luck trying to navigate these trails. There were two different trail maps posted at the trailhead, a third located on the opposite end of the parking lot and missing all-together from the map on the park's website. On the trail, mile markers and sign posts were broken and/or missing. An Eagle Scout troop tried to rectify this situation but unfortunately, their work has not been maintained by the park. The terrain was great for a light, easy run but I spent most of my time doubling back on my path, trying to figure out how the trail system worked. If off-roading isn't for you, there are extensive paved trails that run throughout the park. These paths seem to be well-depicted on maps and signs. Overall, the park had a great atmosphere and we will be back in the near future!
