Texas Outdoor Survival Skills: Fire Building Basics

  • McKinney Roughs Nature Park 1884 State Hwy 71 West Cedar Creek, Texas, 78612 USA (map)

One of the most critical survival skills in the outdoors is the ability to start fire under various adverse conditions. This class provides practical strategies that every outdoor traveler should know about the importance of fire: purposes of fire in emergency situations; locating sources of fuel; different ignition techniques for starting the fire. This class is taught by experienced instructors from both REI and LCRA. The Fire Building Basics class will be a hands-on experience with windproof matches, lighters, flint & steel, magnesium strikers, and the bow-drill method. Participants will be coached on these techniques and fire building architecture. Learn how to improvise materials to make your own bow drill set during an outdoor emergency.
